Loathe at First Sight by Suzanne Park

Rating: 2 out of 5.

Genres: Romance, Contemporary Adult

“For a mere seven dollars, I bought Ian a present: a “World’s Greatest Boss” oversize coffee cup. With a Sharpie marker, I wrote on the bottom “Juuuuust kidding!”

This novel follows Melody Joo as she navigates her dream job as a video game producer. This isn’t as easy as she thought as she deals with sexism in the gaming industry and her distractingly handsome intern. You get to watch her story unfold as she overcomes obstacles and finds love.

I really wanted to like this book but turns out I am just surprised that actually I finished it. I didn’t understand Melody’s motivations at all… did she actually like or play video games or was she just doing this to spite others? Even though it’s only from her perspective, I feel like I don’t know much about her at all. Regardless of her intentions, the romance was absolutely bland. For a book that has a title that screams enemies to lovers, they had no chemistry and it was just so dull. I can’t even remember the intern’s name, even though he is the love interest!!

The only reason this book isn’t getting one star is because of the way the author showed the struggle women can experience in male-dominated industries. As a woman and a gamer, I could relate personally to how hateful and sexist the gaming community can be. I think when it came to that this book was a good look into that world if you didn’t know. Other than that, I am disappointed.
