The Guest List by Lucy Foley

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Genre: Mystery, Thriller, Adult

“It’s always better to get it out in the open – even if it seems shameful, even if you feel like people won’t understand.”

On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed. But the relationships are complicated, there are secrets and someone turns up dead.

Off the bat, I was spooked out by the island and was shocked by how anyone would want to have their wedding at such a scary place. The book takes place within the span of two days and you bounce back and forth between days and perspectives. There are a good amount of characters and at first, I was confused but as the story progressed I started to remember them. They were all so well written and so much depth to them.

This is my first real mystery book and it was honestly really thrilling. You find out fairly soon that someone is dead but don’t find out who until almost the end of the book. I think that makes it fun because throughout the book you’re trying to figure out who will die. But because almost all of the characters in this book are awful in one way or another, it’s not easy to determine who will die, and who will kill.

Olivia was my favourite, and finding out her complete story kept me completely invested. I loved how everything unfolded and thought it was so thrilling! I understand why this won for mystery in the Goodreads Choice Award. I had a lot of fun while reading this and loved the drama, and seeing some of these people suffer.
