Crown of Coral and Pearl by Mara Rutherford

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

A childhood accident left Nor with a scar which has made her ‘valueless’ compared to her perfect twin sister who is arranged to be wed to the Prince. But when her sister Zaddie gravely injures herself, Nor must go in her place using magic to disguise her scars or else her village is at risk. Will she be able to survive long enough to save her people.

I didn’t know much going into this but got hooked as soon as I dived in. I enjoyed the character and how truly dark this was for a young adult book. The mother was horrible the village people were uneducated and misogynist. It was awful and I totally enjoyed it. All of the antagonists fueled my rage and made me dedicated to watching Nor fuck up the system.

There was instant love which I didn’t enjoy, to be honest, I didn’t care about the romance at all really. I enjoyed the sisterly relationship and characters, which ultimately is what pushed me through the book. The world and overall story were exciting and fast to read and I already have the next book ready to go. I haven’t been able to get into fantasy for a little so I am very excited to see where this goes.
